battery life is terrible

I upgraded my iphone 3G to 3.1.2 a few days ago, and i have noticed my battery life is terrible. After a 12 hour charge it goes down from 100% to 10%in 5 hours without using the phone. My battery life lasted for 10 hours on 3.0 earlier. I have a few apps installed in my phone. Could it be because these apps are running in the background? Pls help
