The battery on my MacBook Pro is almost kaput. I have it on low power charging to 80%. How long can I expect it to last and will it eventually stop working if plugged into mains? Sorry a bit of a technophobe :)

I have been quoted 750€ for a replacement at an Apple registered repairer, I assume it'd be the same if I returned to Apple direct.

Having read a thread on here where they think the shop put in a dud battery it kind of puts me off.

I love my laptop but am questioning whether it'll be wise to put a new battery in rather than say, putting the 750€ towards a new one. Is 6-7 years a good innings for a battery?

I just use it to browse, watch a bit of Apple TV, emails, photos etc.

Thanks for any advice.

What version of macOS are you running on the MBP? I have the 2019 i9 16" MBP on Sequoia w/ battery health 81%. These things suck battery juice like crazy, even just doing basic computing activities as you describe. Instead of swapping in a new battery, I chose to put the money towards purchasing a used 2021 M1 Max MBP, which is incredibly more performant and battery life is hours longer. I do plan to replace the battery in the 2019 eventually once it drops below 80% simply because I really enjoy using it to run x86 virtual machines, etc.

Truth be told, you could put the money towards a 15" M2/M3/M4 MacBook Air and never look back.

Hi, it's running Tahoe 26.1
I'm a bit of a procrastinator, took me several years to decided on MBP :) I did look at the MacBook Air as an alternative.
Thanks for advice.

This is a great point, not only with laptops, you see this in cars, too. Once your fix/repair price becomes like 1/2 the cost of a new machine, probably time to seriously consider the new machine.

Where are you that the quoted price for a battery replacement is 750 euros?! Apple’s own website gives $250 USD for that service…

Edit: the website I used https://support.apple.com/mac/repair
2nd edit: yes, you can use the laptop plugged in even with a dead battery, depending… however, it’s not guaranteed and your battery will fail suddenly and catastrophically. I would get a new battery direct from Apple.
