No this isn't another BatteryGate thread.
Just a curiosity. With my previous iPhones the phone seemed to alway shut it self off around 2% so I guess it can gracefully close any open file/memory handles.

I noticed tonight that the phone was at 1% before I hooked it up. Did this change with the 4S? Or was there a setting on by default before for this?
 
Ok. Then it was something with my old 4 then. I remember several times seeing the battery die and once it hit 2% the Apple logo pops up and it shuts down.

For the sake of your batteries lifespan, it's a very poor idea to allow it to discharge below 5%. It serves no purpose. Just plug it in and charge it.
