Battery Monitor in Activity Monitor

Can anyone tell me if the "Time on Battery" statistic in activity monitor is accurate, and how it works? I think the laptop has been on battery way longer than what is registered. Also, I think it reset itself before I plugged it in. Not sure how that counter resets. I would have assumed when it gets plugged in.
