I've been playing games on facebook and I noticed that it is much slower when I'm running on the battery on my ibook and faster when plugged in to electricity. Could this be?? More hangups when on the battery alone. Does this mean I need a new battery or what?

If I am correct, while running on battery power, your computer runs a bit slower in order to improve battery life. You don't need a new battery.

If you go into your power saver settings menu you may have the option to change the battery settings from "longer life" to "higher performance."
