I took my mom's iPhone 6S to the Apple Store a couple of days ago to get her battery replaced. The store is 2 hours away, but thought a road trip would be fun.

Today she tried using her flash light and it's not working. Then she tried the away facing camera and she gets a black screen. The FaceTime (is that what it's called?) works fine, and everything else seems to be working fine.

Are there any suggestions on what I should try? Could a backup and restore help? From what I've read online, all I could find was a few having a similar issue and it turned out to be hardware related.

I'm off Tuesday and Wednesday, but I'd rather not spend it driving to Apple again. We'd also rather not send it off for repair.

Based on what you described, I'm guessing they accidentally bumped / disconnected the camera's connector off the logic board, especially since it's after you had it serviced.

This is a hardware issue & more likely due to disconnection with the logic board. You should plan for another fun road trip.

That’s what I’m thinking.

Would Apple give me any issues if I don’t make the appointment right away? I’d like to go next week instead of this week.

I know whats wrong. The ribbon cable that connects the camera/front mic/speaker can be easily teared if you aren't careful when you lift up the screen to get to the battery.

I made the same mistake the first time i changed an iPhone battery. The 2nd time, i was more careful. Really surprised that a so-called Genius did that, or even perform a check afterwards to entice any problems.

Take it back to the store and complain.

edit: I just re-read your post and you mention the camera on the back, not the front as i mention. Either way it'll still be a problem caused by the battery swap, so take it back to Apple.

Just turning up won’t help. Such issues need time to be investigated. At least they’ll need to open the phone again to check and verify what went wrong. Book an appointment for next week when you can actually go. There won’t be any issues.

Contact Apple Customer Care over the phone, so that your issue can get logged. You can then schedule your store appointment with them.
