iPhone SE 2nd gen battery needing replacement since it hit 80% health. My dad is elderly and barely knows how to use it as it is. I don’t know if it’s worth replacing the battery or just get a new phone with basics? 🤷🏼‍♂️ Apple wants $69 while my local Best Buy will do it for $55.

I always recommend a battery replacement before getting a new phone. All the more so here given that a) your father likely won’t make use of any new features; b) the SE2 still supports the latest OS; and, c) the unnecessary cost of an upgrade.

I would also say battery replacement is best. While the OS would be the same, he would unlikely benefit from a new phone. The only exception is if his eye sight is going bad already, in which case maybe upgrading to a 13 or 14 Plus would be good for him due to the larger screen size.

Even going to another model like anything from the 12 to 16 with the 6.1” might improve his experience, but granted not as much as the Plus models. Not recommending the Pro Max models since he would really be unlikely to use any of the extra features like extra camera.

But if his eyesight is good and he is satisfied with his experience already, the only problem is it’s not lasting as long then maybe a new battery is all he needs. Perhaps also consider a third party battery case which could further extend the battery life.

Changing devices for the older parents is always a complicated process. When and if SE will fail you can always get a new one, just make sure the backup works.

I would just change the battery since the SE 2020 will be fine for your dad’s needs for many years to come. Getting a newer phone will result in him having to relearn the interface as there will be no physical home button.
