I wrote to Feral requesting a release date on this great game & just received this:

"I'm happy to say Battlestations Midway will be released at the end of the week in the UK and the following week in the US."

Hi,
I just downloaded it and tried it. The game only works in multiplayer mode (or is it just the demo) so to play you absolutly need to join a server.
Unfortunatly, for now, there's not a lot of available servers and you better be there at the right time to eventualy catch one of them. Why at the right time? 'cause most of them don't allow late joining. So if you get online a few sec after the game was started it's like you missed the train.

The result is, if you know nothing about BSM, it's pretty impossible to have an idea of how worthy this game is. Most of what i've seen for now are just some screenshots...

But then, if after a few attempts, you're finaly lucky enough to join a server, then starts a new struggle:
There's no tutorial available (or at least i didn't find any in the demo). So you are there trying to play, left alone with that "very ergonomically original, complex and unusual" UI. It's so unusual that all that is left to you is rotating around your ship. Awesome.

They should put in the demo a hand by hand tutorial like there is in Eve Online or Total War.

So I downloaded the demo and tried the same thing. Apparently 10.5.5 broke something and it freezes fairly quickly. I also second everything about the lack of a demo, it was like being put in a jet liner and being told "just fly it". Unless you have flown a jet liner before, not much is going to happen. Not much positive at least.

Their is a demo and it is online only, I know it would be nice to have a single player demo as well but that's life it was never made and we could not just make one for the Mac for a number of reasons.

I did make a walk-though guide/demo on our site and I have seen at least one or two demos games most of the time on GameRanger.

About the ATI HD series crash, this was caused by a bug in Apple/ATi drivers for the HD2XXX series cards we are working with ATI to make a quick fix and we will also know that ATI will fix the bug in updated drivers.

So you can wait a few days and we will release an auto-update patch for the demo and full game or you can play on 10.5.4 :) Sadly when someone breaks something in the OS it takes a while to find out who, what where when and why and then make a patch. We have a quick fix that looks hopeful in the office and we hope to get a patch out the beginning of next week if not sooner.

Cheers,

Edwin

Where is the patch to make it work on 10.5.5??? If there isn't one yet, when will it come out?

I think it is very unprofessional to stock games that aren't compatible with an operating system and not even put out a warning. Even worse, its been a LONG time since the 10.5.5 issues started and still no patch has been made. Way to go, Feral. And to think I was actually going to buy this game... Lucky I found out it will never work with my computer before I went to the Apple Store.

Most Battlestations: Midway Problems Solved

Hello BSM-interested MacRumors Community. I've got exciting news to tell you. First of all, for those of you who still haven't bought the game or stopped playing it because of the previous post, you no longer have to be grouchy as a new patch (I think it was 1.0.3) has solved this problem. The game is going to run crash-free on virtually any Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 or later. You can get it here. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/demos_updates/battlestationsmidway.html
Also, for those experiencing problems when running the game on 27" iMacs with ATi HD 4xxx graphics cards, Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz and Mac OS X 10.6.x (i.e. the game running sluggish), I just contacted Feral about the problem and they told me they'll be releasing a patch soon.
We have just tried running the game on an identical machine and it appears that the issue is also present there. We will be investigating this and will look to release a patch to resolve the issue however we cannot guarantee when this will be, although we do aim to make it one of our update priorities due to the lack of performance on the new hardware.

Bsm

this is really a great game. Does anybody know if they'll ever make battlestations: pacific for mac?

any way we can petition for them to make it?

Bsm

Hey there, I don't understand your post:

Does the feral site show BS:pacific as an upcoming release? I only see three other games.

Also, the screenshot you linked to was on the general (ie, non-mac) battlestations site.

Is there something I missed? How are you getting that BS:pacific for mac is in development?

oops, sorry!

it's the stern of the yamamoto from the screenshot.

good eyes, and thanks for the observation. very excited!

(my mistake, I believe that would actually be an Iowa-class battleship. can any naval-nerds confirm?)

Although I am not sure wether I am the type of person you are looking for, the ship is certainly an Iowa Class Battleship and neither the Yamato nor the Musashi, the two sister ships. You can clearly see the difference in these two pictures. NOTE: The picture of the BB-61 (USS Iowa) is a modern one so the ship is also fitted with a "helideck", but it's not a huge difference.

Thanks for the confirmation. at least they didn't include the tomahawk ABL launchers from the gulf war!

anyone have any info on the BSP timeframe?

actually, the game before it (brothers in arms) i think is already released, so BSP is probably their next game...?

Why? It would have been cool to be able to launch cruise missiles at enemy land installations from 1350 NMs away. Don't ya think? Is it just me, or are the ranges of ship's guns in BSM a little bit unrealistic. Of course I realize it would be very hard to aim at such a distance in a non-sim game but still, 3.0 NMs for 16 in guns is a bit odd. Anyway. I hope someone releases a good naval simulator soon. Lucky flight-sim fans. Anyway, until then, I'll stick to Battlestations.
