iPlayer has been rather weird recently: A few days ago I was somehow able to stream programs over my 3G connection which is usually not possible, but that only lasted about a day before it reverted back to telling me to connect to WiFi.
Now it seems to be on the other end of the spectrum, and BBC have gone as far as to check whether I'm tethered to iPhone that is on a 3G connection, and to bring up the same "Connect to WiFi" message. As far as I know there are no other apps that do this, and even the App Store removes the 20MB cellular restriction when you tether to the iPhone.
Honestly, what the hell? It's annoying enough that they don't allow streaming over 3G, but going to such extremes as to stop it working even with a WiFi tether is just ludicrous. They give some bullsh excuse that "We currently don't have the capacity to encode a 3G stream for these devices", yet 3G networks have become more than sufficient to stream iPlayer. There is clearly some ulterior motive here...
Why so serious, BBC?
