Had that happen to me when I tried to move some apps around while they were installing. When the App finishes installing the space will be filled, you will see, just a bug. 
Im sure everyone wished they can do this

Id do it as I love to have designs like this pic below, which is like an X with apps and the rest are like folders, so having a space in between could make things quite creative
