and killing firefox doesn't help. If I try to restart firefox I lose access to the launch bar, actually anything that tries to open a link will just lock the system cold. The only option is to pull plug. This seems to actually be getting worse. What is OS X doing? All I can figure is that it might be trying to read my Time Machine disk but why a right click in firefox leads to a full system lock up is beyond me.

After restart of system everything is fine for awhile. It can go days or even a week or more before cratering. There is no error, no black screen, just no response at all.
