is beach balls the result of the hard drive (platter). I did a reinstall and its worse now so im wondering if the hard drive is going bad and if a ssd would fix it. it seems like sometimes i click something and it gets stuck with beach ball then i have to either restart or force quit the app to fix it.

I will look into running disk check. I plan on selling the machine so I need to get to the bottom of it. im not going to just dump it on someone else. if i cant figure it out or suspect a drive problem i will put a ssd in it.

Mine's done that ever since I bought it in 2010. I think in my case it's due to only having 4 gigs of ram and having too many programs open.
