I've been getting the lame beachball more and more lately. I think it might be isolated to Safari, but I'm not sure. It just so happens that I spend most of the time using Safari, so I might just be disproportionately assigning blame to the app I just happen to use most often. I haven't isolated any particular action to the beachball, but I know it definitely happens when I open a new tab.

I'm running:

Safari 4 beta 5528.16
MBP 2.8ghz unibody (5 months old)
10.5.6

I installed Glims yesterday, but I'm confident the problem started prior to this and has become progressively worse.

How can I get rid of the beachballs? I'm a new mac user and I"m not very familiar with troubleshooting issues.

I found Safari 4 beta to be troublesome as well and slowed my internet experience way down. I finally just went back to Safari 3.1.2 or whatever the latest non-beta version is, this made everything work extremely well again. I had troubles on both my 2.8 Ghz iMac and 1.83 Ghz MacBook, I hope this helps!
