I just got my iPhone exchanged for a new one and this showed up in the App Store:

It's not just new iPhones. It's free on my iPhone 5 as well. That's how it works with Spotify and the like. The app is free, but the service costs money. Nothing new or surprising here.

Does Spotify show up as an Apple app on your 5? Regardless, it seems like the point wasn't that that app is free or that the app is available, but that it is listed as an Apple app. That isn't new?

Well, as one of the earlier posts linking to a MacRumors article about this shows it's relatively new, as of a little over a week ago.

No, it doesn't. I misunderstood the OP. Beats being an Apple app was news a few days ago though.
