  • Perfect. Leave the active noise canceling headphones behind!

  • Okay. Do a good job as an alternative, but on long flights opt for noise cancelling set.

I am hoping to further slim down the traveling arsenal. I'm a travel light kind of guy. I usually fly with the Beats Studio and they do a great job (replaced older Bose set). I like them, but they have two fatal flaws. One, they are bulky. Two, if the battery runs out, they go out completely. No passive sound.

I hope to leave them behind this time and only take BeatsX along for the ride. I know they are not noise cancelling like the Beats, but they do seem to isolate sound pretty well. Has anyone used them on the plane? Can you watch movies, listen to music, etc?

While they are nice for noise cancelling they tend to get a bit uncomfortable after 4-5 hours. I will sometimes break out my Bose QC20's which I could wear 24/7 but are corded.

On an airplane, I go with my Bose QuietComfort 20 noise cancelling earbuds. They work great and are compact, replacing my QuietComfort headset. They're corded but on an airplane I don't care.

On the BeatsX, a 5 - 10 min charge will give you a couple of hours. which I love. I fly cross country JFK-LAX often and they are great. Longer than that, they can start to get uncomfortable so if you fly 6+ regularly, get over-the-ear headphones. But even over-ears can get uncomfortable after that long though.

When I sit in Biz, I use the noise cancelling headphones to watch movies but otherwise, I use my BeatsX for the whole trip. But that's the 1 problem with them on planes - they are wireless and you can't plug them into the IFE system to watch movies. When I'm in Coach, I bring a pair of old earphones or just watch what I've loaded up on my iPad.

As for noise cancelling, they do well enough. But nothing is going to drown out that screaming baby sitting behind you.

I just flew from ORD to LAS and decided to give them a shot. Literally everything you said is exactly what I took away form that experience. In my case, the fit is pretty solid. I was able to comfortably wear them for 3-4 hours. I also forgot, which is just weird, about the IFE system using analog plugs. Thankfully I’ve seen pretty much everything offered on American as of right now. So, this wasn’t a big loss. I had an iPad to keep me entertained.

I have to add, for anyone else reading about the BeatsX, that they isolate sound extremely well. I was able to drown out the general airplane nose (flying 737) pretty well at about 80% volume. I imagine a longer flight on a newer jet like the 787 would be extremely comfortable given the lower noise level.

They cannot replace a solid over the hear noise cancelling set, especially if you want to connect to the IFE system, but they do hold their own on shorter trips when traveling light is the number one priority.

Yes, my first flight w/ the BeatsX was such a **DOH** moment. lol. Thankfully AA still handed out cheap earphones so I was able to use them for that flight. I had considered getting a BT transmitter to use but then just decided I'd carry my old 3.5mm jack earphones that were laying around. those + the BeatsX are still much lighter and more compact than over-ears.
