I just had my MacBook Pro fixed under warranty because the display screen was a bit skewed from being dropped. I had the same problem before and it wasn't covered in warranty. When I asked it, they said it was because that was an accidental damage. But this was accidental damage too. But I was afraid that they might change their mind about this being covered in warranty if I pursued the subject so I didn't say anything.

Does this mean that whether or not your damage will be covered has to do with the Genius who examines it who decides to make it be covered with a warranty or not?

The Apple warranty doesn't cover accidental damage at all. Apple reps can and sometimes do make exceptions and cover things that are not covered by warranty, but in doing so, they're doing you a favor, not fulfilling any obligation.
