Belkin USB 2.0 Plus Hub (4 Port)

I have purchased the following Belkin USB hub and I use it with my MacBook Air. I have an Apple wired keyboard, Logitech VX nano receiver and my iPhone 3G connected to the hub.

However, I have two issues and I wonder if anyone else has experienced the same.

1. It takes quite a while from when I plug in the hub to my MBA to when I can use the devices.

2. I thought that when using the AC adapter and my MBA not connected to the hub that I would still be able to charge my iPhone. Isn't the hub getting power from the mains?
