I had been thinking about graphics performance since the Final Fantasy VII port to iOS came out with modern iPhone requirements despite being a game designed to run on a PS1, and now that Apple makes a game console, it got me curious how things compare.
Yes, I know it's all relative. What's fun is fun, and when the architecture is wildly different it's really hard to do direct comparisons, and storage and CPU speed can make a big difference, and optimization makes a huge difference for dedicated hardware, and it's all e-peen measuring anyway, and who cares, and so on.
I get all that--I'm just curious from a geeky, "cool, look how far technology has advanced!" standpoint how, in very general terms, the GPU performance of a Wii, Wii U, PS3, or Xbox 360 compares to an iPhone 6 (A8, that is). That is, how a console of a few years ago (and I and my friends still mainly use) compares to the phone in my pocket today and the AppleTV in my living room next month.
Finding benchmarks that are even remotely comparable is really hard, though. I dug up claims that the PS3 basically uses a stripped-down GeForce 7800 GTX, the Xbox 360 uses a slightly more advanced Radeon X1800, and that the Wii U is somewhat similar to a Radeon HD 4650, but even assuming those are correct, finding a benchmark for any of those cards under Windows (or Mac in the case of the Radeon Mobile 4650) that's also available on iOS is proving challenging.
Anybody know of a benchmark that's been run on older desktop-grade GPUs as well as iOS, or have any input?
