Unless I'm mistaken, that's how you register your warranty with Apple. So you would want to do that. You never know when you might need your phone repaired or replaced. I know it sent the serial number when I did it.
 
As long as you have the Email receipt from Apple,
i think the 1 year waranty is Good....

I don't think you have to register your iPhone..
 
You don't have to register the iPhone. Apple has a record of when the phone was purchased. That's what they base the warranty on. The warranty follows the device not the owner.
 
Damn, how come i didn't get one of those cards i need to mail in so i my iPhone 3G product can be registered in 6-8 weeks!?
