What are the benfits of the SAS hard drives?

And could one buy one for the previous rev Mac Pro, would they be compatible?
 
They are much faster than SATA drives, 15,000RPM vs max 10,000RPM (Raptor).

However, if you read the fine print, the SAS drives require the Mac Pro RAID card. So you probably can put one in the older Mac Pro if you are willing to spend $500 on the drive and $750 on the RAID card.
