As noted by AllThingsD, former Apple senior vice president of Mac Software Engineering Bertrand Serlet has joined the board of directors at software virtualization company Parallels. Serlet left Apple in March 2011 and was revealed just weeks ago to be working on a new cloud-focused startup called Upthere.
Serlet will serve as a non-executive director, bringing to Parallels his distinctive professional experience of having led the development of Mac OS X from its inception until his departure from Apple in 2011. Serlet's distinguished background and unique insights will help Parallels accelerate growth and continue creating software that simplifies life for consumers and businesses. [...]

"With Parallels Desktop, Parallels became a critical developer for the Mac platform, and I got to know and appreciate the Parallels leadership team. I also discovered Parallels deep involvement with the cloud, represented by its rich portfolio of products. I look forward to drawing on my career at Apple to help guide Parallels as it continues on its impressive growth trajectory," said Serlet.
Parallels has been one of the most popular software solutions for Mac users seeking to run Windows in a virtualized environment rather than relying on Apple's Boot Camp solution.

Ouch!

Wow be easy....its a strange photo, but if you look at some of the details...it screams major accident w/ tons a surgery. The guy has probably been through hell.

That's good news, Bert is a guru, and Parallels is clearly committed to pushing the envelope in performance.

...while VMWare sits & twiddles its thumbs...

Ugh, that photo!!!

It looks like he's running a different OS in each eye.

I think that looks better than the gaping hole that would be there if he didn't have a glass eye.

I'm happy for him continuing in successes, and I hope that he's happy as well.

Think this thread hit the tasteless mark in record time.

As far as the actual news, I'm sort of wondering why he joined the board and if it means anything at all (i.e. will it give them a significant advantage over VMWare).

a cloud-based virtualized environment would be a particular area of interest. kind of like OnLive Desktop, but something proprietary.

I love Parallels and it works great, but I hate that they CONSTANTLY advertise to you -- throughout the installation, and often when you start up the software, even if you check the box that says "don't show this again". Annoying as hell... I wouldn't even expect this level of nuisance from free, ad-supported software.

This could be one of the reasons why Bertrand would join the board. I can't imagine him joining the board if Parallels will stay what is is today.

Maybe some other Parallels development that could interest him: Something like VMware Vue for Mac and iOS?

I don't think VMware have anything to worry about just yet, Parallels aren't really active in the server virtualisation and data centre market which is VMware's main business.

Not sure there is much between them in Mac desktop virtualisation either, just a personal preference which one you prefer. Think techies prefer VMware and home users Parallels.

Parallels other main product is Plesk, which has a pretty big chunk of the web hosting control panel market. Nice product as well, they screwed up big time with the release of v10 though they have done a good job sorting out the mess.

I wonder how much longer Fusion and Parallels will be around. Microsoft have improved the built in virtualisation in Windows 8 (I'm talking about the desktop version, not server) which a lot more people will start using.

Kind of puts some pressure on Apple to build in the same functionality to OS X, at which point stand alone products will become pretty much redundant. Bit surprised it isn't in Mountain Lion, I'd be really surprised if it's not in the next release as its more important in OS X than Windows.

Together with Avie Tevanian, Bertrand Serlet constitutes one of the GREAT management losses at Apple in the last five years...both executives' talents at developing top-class Mac software and OS won't be replaced anytime soon.

In the meantime, we have to deal with Scott Forstall, Craig Federighi and their rabid integration of iOS crap into OS X...alas, how the times have changed...
