Called my apple store. They said, "we don't know when, but If it is available (referring to white iPhone 4) on launch day, your best bet is to reserve a black iPhone, and then when you get here, swap it for a white. It will indeed save you a phone both ways, and you have a chance of getting white, if in fact it's available on launch day."
Which is what I did.

I would not rely on that. If you have ever taken anything back, specially after opening it, it's a swap for alike item. We tried that with the 3GS and had to keep the same color.

I mean like, they have your name on an iPhone box. Which is on a sticker. And the reservation line goes in before ( I think ). Before they open the black phone, ask for white and voilà.

He meant that if the white is there on launch day, pick that up instead of the black (which he already reserved). I've done that in the past (reserved a black and picked up a white instead).
