I am considering a purchase of a 17" unit. I will probably buy a base unit and then upgrade the memory and possibly the HDD myself (this is largely driven by procurement transaction limits). Is there experience here in adding a SSD to the 17in? I could manage with 256Gb, but have 500Gb drives reached the market yet?

thanks

I think Super Talent makes the only 512GB SSD at the moment, and it's retail price is over $1,500. From what I read, in the 250GB range the OCZ Vertex seems to get very good reviews. You can find it for around $700. A lot of people like Corsair SSDs also, their 256GB drive runs a little over $600 I think?

I have the 256GB SSD from Corsair, which is just a rebranded Samsung, and it's been pretty fantastic.

I would recommend the Corsair P256, OCZ Vertex 250GB, or 160GB Intel X25M.

The SSD drive controller is the most critical part of an SSD, and the older controllers were horrendous compared to the new good ones.

As long as you stay on this list, you should be fine:

(New Samsung S3C29RBB01 controller)
Corsair P256
Corsair P128 / P64
OCZ Summit
Samsung PB22-J
SuperTalent Masterdrive SX

(Indilinx Barefoot IDX110M00 controller)
OCZ Vertex
OCZ Agility
SuperTalent Ultradrive ME (MLC)
G.Skill Falcon
Patriot Torqx
RunCore Pro IV
Solidata K6 (MLC)

(Intel v1 controller)
Intel X25M
Kingston SSDNow M
PQI X25M
