After my father passed a few years ago, I found a vinyl collection of over 100 or so in mixed condition. I spent a few weeks researching value and the related variables - condition, press, stereo, LP, promo, unopened/opened, etc and know it's not as simple as entering the artist and album information to obtain current prices. Adding more frustration is the lack of barcodes on 99% of them. I found an iOS app, Discogs, which seems to be one of the more highly respected and used database and pricing apps yet nothing for Mac's (I can log into the site on my Mac which is fine).

If anyone has any recommendations and advice on databasing a vinyl collection I'd greatly appreciate it. I want to get an idea of what I'm dealing with before bringing them in for sale as I don't want to get taken for a ride. :)

There are a lot of apps out there that can do this. I happen to use CLZ to log all my CD's.

They have other apps that you can purchase, as I have the movie and comic book app from them. They did just change they are now subscription based, but there look up features are top notch and the info that is pulled down and stored is pretty darn good! I have been using them for about eight or nine years.

If all you want to do is catalog artist and album, you could always use Numbers or Excel.

I know a lot of people use Discogs for this. It has evolved into a marketplace but it was originally designed for just this purpose. It scans bar codes and so on, and is aware of special releases, limited runs, etc. Happy collecting!
