Hello,

I tried searching but only found threads from a long time ago (~2016ish).

I am starting to use the iPad for textbook reading, which also requires me to highlight and take notes from time to time in the margins. Are most people utilizing Apple Books in PDF format for this? If so - can you search notes you take with the Apple Pencil in the margins or anything?

What is the most easy to use app for taking notes while reading a textbook on an iPad for you?

Thank you!

Yes, notes in the Apple Books app (often referred to as iBooks) are searchable
, along with highlights and bookmarks, through the search bar in the app. You can search for text within the books, and any notes you've added to the book will be included in the search results.

How to search in Books
  • Open the Books app.
  • Tap the Search field at the top of the screen.
  • Start typing the word or phrase you are looking for.
  • Tap on one of the search suggestions that appear to refine your search.

What is included in the search
  • The search function includes any text you have typed or highlighted in the books.
  • It also searches through any notes you have added, including handwritten notes.
  • You can also see all of your highlights and notes by tapping the page, tapping the menu button, and then tapping Bookmarks & Highlights.

Yes, you can make notes on PDFs in iBooks (now called Books) by using the markup tools to write, highlight, and add text
. You can also use the Apple Notes app to attach and annotate PDFs with a variety of tools, including drawing and adding text.

Annotate PDFs in Books
  1. Open the PDF in the Books app by tapping the "share" button and choosing "Books".
  2. Use the markup tools to annotate. You can select text to highlight it or tap to add a text note.
  3. Other options include adding a signature or drawing on the document.
  4. You can then share the annotated PDF from the Books app.

Annotate PDFs in Notes
  1. Attach a PDF to a note in the Apple Notes app by dragging the file or sharing it from another app.
  2. Tap the PDF to open it in the note.
  3. Tap the "Markup" or "Handwriting Tools" button to access drawing, highlighting, and text tools.
  4. You can also use your finger or Apple Pencil to sketch or type directly onto the PDF.
