I just downloaded a buncha .avi movies. I am new to mac osx.. wat do you guys reccomend :)

AVI is a container that may have really old windows mpeg-1,mpeg-2 or a lot of other codecs inside it.
You will find a lot more AVIs with MPEG-4 video (or derivatives) than MPEG-1/2. I would rather recommend installing Perian, it can play most video formats, and for the few it can't (like the old Indeo Video) there are no OS X decoders; not to mention that converting it will only lose quality without any certain reduction in filesize.

Another vote for Perian. Free, easy, Quicktime plays back AVIs flawlessly with this installed.
