faulty battery on my 2011 macbook pro.

got service battery indicator.. took it to the apple store and they quoted $130 to replace it.

might as well do it myself and save some money, anyone recommend a battery replacement?

Most if not all the battery you see on eBay, Amazon, etc are unreliable and will most likely crap out on you after a few months. iFixit offers them for $120, but I don't know how reliable those are. Honestly for $130, it's worth it and you'll have a peace of mind, knowing it won't suddenly die on you.

I've seen firsthand aftermarket batteries bloat, buldge and even smoke.

Buy an Apple battery.

I thought so too but it was out of warranty and they would not replace for free.

They usually won't replace it unless it's under warranty

I got mine replaced free by citing the following statement on Apple's website:

The built-in battery of your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air is designed to deliver up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity.

No warranty on my Early 2011 MBP.

Genuine battery for Macbook Pro 8,2 could cost just $60, if you find a good place.
This particular place was confirmed selling genuine batteries by users, just read the reviews

Of course, I am not advertising. There are plenty of other good sellers at Aliexpress with a similar price
For some reason, this seller ships to USA with EMS only - not free; but shipping to European countries is free.
So, if you live in USA, you may want to find a similar seller, which has a free shipping to USA

Also, do not forget to get the necessary screwdrivers:
* Phillips #00 Screwdriver
* Tri-wing Y1 Screwdriver
* T6 Torx Screwdriver (optional)
