I hate homekit with the fire of 1000 suns
Why do you hate HomeKit? I genuinely want to know - currently building a home and was planning to abandon Alexa and Google and go all in with Apple and HomeKit since I trust Apple given their track record with protecting privacy over the others. Do not yet use HomeKit.
Regarding Matter - I’m not buying anything until more devices are available that support it. A horrible time to buy smart home devices.

Thanks for sharing and Happy Thanksgiving, 🦃 quick rant to make me feel better, Im not happy or thankful with my Nanoleaf essentials…I’m so sick of resetting them to get them to work. This time around and no they don’t at all.

@salutcemoi :
I'm also genuinely curious why you hate it so much - much of our house is HomeKit accessible (almost all the lights, thermostat, security, Netatmo weather doodads, etc.) We haven't had any problems with it at all. The few things we have that are not HomeKit compatible seem to cause much more trouble, in my experience.

@antibolo , @antnythr , @skiadct
My understanding is that anything that gets HomeKit certified at this point is required to be Matter compatible -- is this not the case? I actually was open to picking up new devices if I came across any that were interesting, but now I'm not sure...

@everybody:
Regarding security - we just set up a Ubiquiti home network system, so our plan was to move all the IoT devices to a separate WLAN (with a separate VLAN assignment too if I can figure that stuff out). Could anyone comment as to whether this is a reasonable approach? And if we do this, then how would the AppleTVs [Home hubs] be assigned? I assume that they have to be on the same VLAN, but then are they accessible when the phone is connected to the regular house WLAN? or do they get assigned two VLANs?

Seems like the worst possible time to buy smart home appliances, when Matter is right around the corner? Better to wait a bit still for devices that won't lock you into a single ecosystem...

I've made the decision to not buy any more smart devices that aren't Matter certified. Why lock myself into an ecosystem?

Most work with Google and Alexa anyways along with HomeKit, so you’re not going to be locked in. All the cameras and accessories I have work with all 3.

Regarding Matter support - just so you all are aware, Matter lives in the OSI layers 4-7 and is IP-based. So anything Thread/WIFI can technically be supported by Matter if the mfg wants to develop the integration. I know some companies like Eve have already committed to making every device Matter supported - my intuition tells me if you get a Thread-supported device, then it will be Matter supported at some point in the near future.

I love HomeKit due to having access in control center ‘ HomePod and watch . Have tried both Alexa & google. HomeKit better for me , especially with homebridge

Hi,

Well it's because it plays well with some brands and not with others

For example, Apple decided to stop supporting Kala smart plugs; thanks God Google and Alexa exist

I also have 3 Lifx lights, for some reason only 1 of them has been paired with HK, for some reason I couldn't connect the other 2 to it, and I tried every troubleshooting step, checked Wifi settings , 2,4 ghz, 5 ghz etc

But I had no issue connecting all 3 of them to Google and Alexa
But for that 1 light that is connected, when I use Siri, it's really fast, I have to admit

I too wanted to use HK exclusively, and I like how I can access it via the control center in my iPhone/iPad, but alas.....

EDIT : just saw that Kasa plugs are mentioned in the original post ; is HK support back on the menu? I bought mine a few years ago and at the time Apple has stopped supporting Kasa plugs

Is it Apple that stopped support or Kasa?

HomeKit is far from perfect, but it works well enough for me to use.

Yup, you are wrong. Apple does not “support“ any HomeKit products, manufacturers do. TP Link announced HomeKit support for some of their products, then backed out (like Ring). They have now added support for some of their lines.
That’s what I was thinking, but I wasn’t sure.

Most of the above stuff have ridiculous prices, for instance on home automation, there are brands with very low prices which work as good if not better, for instance Shelly.
I made my own lock with a shelly (€10) and a electromagnetic latched doorlock for about €50, total €60 euro, and the good thing, it works with Homekit.
The main entrance does not have the ability to be remotely unlocked, I added a Shelly to my intercom and now it works with Homekit, bridged the Open door button with a Shelly for about €10.
Most doorlocks cost way more, like >$200-300.
This was just a single example, plenty more.
