Hmmm - they also have some "Open Box" MacBook Pros that have slightly higher discounts.

What exactly does "Open Box" mean? Does that just mean the box has been opened, or does that mean that you get it in an ugly brown box or that its been scuffed or something?

It depends. I have bought quite a few open box items from Best Buy, including a few Apple products, one being a 2011 MBA, and a 2005 Mac Mini.

Sometimes they are just like new, and you wouldn't know the difference beside the box is no longer sealed, the 2011 MBA is an example of that.

Sometimes they are missing the original box. Sometimes they are missing all cable, instructions, and packaging. Usually the more it is missing, the greater the discount.

I think the MacBook Air at $200 is a great deal. I have bought two of them around this time over the past few years. Great time to pick one up.

It tells you the quality of the device.

It can be anywhere from someone opened the box, saw the wrong color and immediately returned it without even taking out the unit. To someone who used the device for 2 weeks, didn't like it and returned it but never gave back the box or cables.

If the unit is listed as "Excellent-Certified" usually that is in perfect condition with original cables and boxes.

Interesting that the 9.7" model has the steeper discount. Usually the discounts go up somewhat relative to price. I wonder if Apple isn't selling as many of the 9.7" capacity since it's under powered compared to the 12.9" model. I know I skipped out on it because of this. Does anyone know if you can combine these sale prices with a Best Buy 10% off moving coupon? I'm somewhat tempted to get the 12.9" size but need to keep telling myself that the new ones will be coming out soon. I'm really hoping for the rumored 10.5" size or whatever that would offer a little more display with reduced bezels and the same 4GB RAM found in the larger model.

9.7" has the same chip as 12.9", better display with force touch, and far better cameras. I doubt many consumers will judge by RAM.

Well if they're buying the Pro model then they're likely at least prosumers. Otherwise the iPad Air 2 is a steal for the price/performance ratio and it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy the Pro model unless you have the money and just want it. As someone who is wanting to use the higher-end apps, I don't want to be left out in the cold vs. the 12.9" model just because I don't want a huge tablet. The point is probably irrelevant anyway because Apple doesn't really take the iPad seriously as a real professional device. I can keep hoping, though.

My dream setup is a 5K iMac that can handle everything and an iPad Pro that is super portable and can replace a MacBook in doing most of the lighter professional tasks, within reason. Like I should be able to design a whole spread on my iMac, and then open it on the iPad Pro and swap out an asset or two and re-save it to the cloud and send it to a client or whatever. Or I can burn through editing hundreds of RAW files on my iMac but then maybe edit a few on my iPad Pro when out in the field to share to social media. Or I can start roughing out a drawing on my iPad Pro and then plug it into my iMac and use it as a graphics tablet to finish the drawing in high resolution with tons of layers on my iMac. Or I could mockup designs for a website on my iMac and open one on my iPad Pro to show a client and easily change around a color or move a button or photo. Or code the website on my Mac but open it up on my iPad Pro to make small changes and edits (which I can do to a certain extent with Coda but it's harder to open something like an SVG off the server and modify it and upload it back, or recompile my stylesheet). It's not about doing the whole thing on the iPad, but I want a more seamless software experience between the two so that the work easily flows from one device to the other. I'd be fine with the iPad opening up lower res previews and representations of the final work. That actually works really well in Lightroom Mobile which syncs edits back to the desktop. But I also need to be able to view project files and move things around and update things on the go. I don't want an iPad that replaces my Mac, but something that is better than what we have now and distinctly different compared to iOS on the iPhone. Although really I wouldn't mine an iPad that transforms from iOS UI to macOS UI when docked to a keyboard/trackpad base or an external display, lol.

I picked up an iPad Pro 9.7 today after unexpectedly running across their deals. After the 128 GB Wi-Fi + cellular, AppleCare, Pencil, and Silicone front and back cases, it came out about $200 cheaper than what it would have cost direct from Apple. Apple Pencil is also discounted as well.

If they aren't selling as many, it's not because of the 12.9" model. As I stated back in May, I took mine back after a couple weeks because it just wasn't worth the price premium over the Air 2 unless you absolutely needed Pencil support. Yes it has a much faster processor, but Apple refuses to allow developers to code specifically for that processor to take advantage of it's greater performance, so in real world use most apps run so similarly between the two as to be indistinguishable. Add to that the fact Apple gimped the 9.7" Pro so it doesn't support USB 3 speeds or fast charging like it's 12.9" cousin, and there's just no good reason to pay hundreds more for it instead of the Air 2.

Same chip running at lower speeds, "better display" in as much as it supports TrueTone, which any video or photo professional will disable right out of the box but no force touch, actually, so I'm not sure where you got that, and the cameras are better but who in god's name besides that one super douche in the front row of the concert actually uses the camera on their iPad.
