These are the worst, weirdest iPads Apple has ever made...
What’s bad about them? Only thing that really seems bad to me is the price. Should’ve started at $299 msrp and been discounted to $199/$179 ($149?!) by now…

There is no need for the iPad below this one at this point. It’s like the watch series 3. Let it die Apple.

It would have been fine if Apple had replaced the 9th gen with the 10th gen, but instead, apple decided to make the 10th gen "another tier" in the iPad lineup instead of replacing the 9th gen, no wonder we have 6 (soon 7) different iPads that have different features from each other. Heck, the 12.9 pro has a better screen than the 11-inch, but are still both the "same" product". Apple needs a complete refresh of the iPad lineup at this point.

Oh yeah, I didn’t like that.

EXACTLY! I wouldn't be surprised if iPad sales have been down all because the lineup makes it very confusing for a consumer to make a choice. I feel like it even makes it harder for an Apple Store employee to help make a recommendation on which iPad would be right for the potential buyer.

They really need to simplify the lineup and make each tier stand apart from the others more.

I am with the others, what is so bad or weird about the iPad 10? I paid $400 for mine about a year and half ago. It is perfectly fine for traditional tablet use, ie. consumption and light productivity. Plus, it works seamlessly with my iPhone and MBA. It is part of a terrific ecosystem. I'll keep it for 4 years, so that's ~$8 per month or a little over 25 cents per day....not exactly breaking the bank. Do, I wish it was $349 or $299 when I bought it? Ok, yeah. But, I wish everything was less expensive.

In general, I prefer to use my M2 MBA, but the iPad 10 is fine for its purposes.

Reminder that MacRumors buyers guide says to not buy any iPad at the moment.
That buyers guide isn't really a regular consumers guide... its a guide for a very particular small percentage of Apple customers that visit Macrumors.

Most normal people go out and buy what they need, when they need it... and buy when there is a great sale on.

But then they forego the upsell.

Kings of the upsell.

You can pick up any of the iPads, and do what most consumers would need to, or want to do, on a tablet. Even Apples lowest end iPad is a great tablet and has rock solid build quality.

:)

I also believe it’s a very good price. In the end, most people use an iPad for web browsing, watching videos, etc.

The iPad 10 is excellent for that purpose and it does these tasks nearly just as well as an iPad Pro. For a fraction of the price.

Especially for you: you bought the device shortly after its release. You already got so much use out of it and it’s still the newest regular iPad out there.

Agreed. It only gets weird when you start buying expensive iPad accessories. But, those aren’t for the typical user that just wants a traditional tablet primarily for consumption purposes.

All iPads offer the same experience using iPadOS.

It’s the arbitrary lack of Pencil 2 support that makes the low end iPads “only for consumption”

iPad 10 is very low value. But not because it’s actually that under-powered, but because Apple needs you to buy at least an iPad Air.

iPad 10 is just there to make you appreciate how much more you get from buying an Air or Pro.

Classic Apple up-selling trick.

I don’t see how not having Pencil 2 support makes the iPad 10 “only for consumption”. You don’t need a Pencil 2 to take notes or do other productivity tasks on the iPad 10. You can use the Pencil 1, USB-C Pencil, Logitic Crayon or one of a hundred inexpensive third party pencils.

My daughter uses her iPad 10 along with the new USB-c Pencil as a work journal. No issues. It works fine for her.

I am with yall. I have an 12.9 M1 iPad Pro, but I was just in Target the other day looking at the iPad 10, and I was surprised how nice it was. I had heard some negative comments online about it, so I was thinking the screen would be bad and the non laminated display would be a turn off and the bezels would be too big. But that wasn't the case, the device looked magnificent. I bought my iPad Pro with hopes of doing some productivity on it so I wouldn't have to bring my more expensive MacBook Pro out of the house with me. But iPad OS really just isn't there yet, and even if it was, I never saw my M1 taxed on any of the photo or video editing apps on iPad, so I am pretty sure anyone wishing to do those things would be fine with an iPad 10. I now use my iPad Pro as pretty much a bigger phone and sometimes I read old magazine PDFs on it. It's a media player when I am washing dishes or whatever. I see much more value in the iPad 10, and for 99% of people in the real world, I think the iPad Pros, and yes even the Airs, don't need to exist. There is a really small population of users that have niche use cases and will take advantage of the higher end iPads, but I am guessing most people who actually buy them just do so thinking they need the premium device when they don't.

If Apple wanted to, they could just take the Pros and start them at $2000 and cut back production to make the same amount of money selling less devices. Probably not a thing most people would be happy with, but I think it would be more suited for the real world. Would allow a little more budget for even better features on the Pros so those actually taking advantage of the Pros would have a more complete and "Pro" device. Those that don't need them can have the Airs as a light weight mid tier device with a small price bump and the masses can use the regular iPad that could stay with it's current pricing. This would really balance out the pricing and lineup. As it is right now, everything is squished together price wise and you really have to do research to see what makes sense for you, something that was more of an Android enthusiast requirement in the past. With Apple generally you always could just see the names of the devices and know what was appropriate for your needs and budget.

Okay. But what about it justifies $449 when iPad 9th Gen is $329?
Especially when street price on the 9 is often $250ish. That's why I picked the 9 last year.

I wish there was a basic version of the Mini, too. I likely would have bought an iPad much sooner if it had been an 8 inch with similar specs as a 9, even at the same price. A smaller one is less likely to get dinged in my book bag, or in a kid's backpack, for that matter. Which makes me wonder if primary schools would really prefer 10 inch devices if they had another affordable option.

It’s still terrible value as there’s no spec or features that can’t be had at a much lower price with iPad 9th Gen., while all the meaningful RAM, display and Pencil 2 upgrades are, of course, exclusive to iPad Air and better.

The USB-C Pencil is the most feature-less Pencil Apple has ever put out despite Pencil 1 debuting almost 10 years ago, in 2015.

It retails for $79 without pressure sensitivity AND doesn’t even charge when attaching it magnetically on the side.

It’s like Apple set out to make a counterfeit iPad Air and Pencil 2 just to cash in on all the buyers who don’t have the means to buy an actual Air, who might have, wisely, opted for a tablet from another brand.

Apple’s perpetual pursuit towards more and more product segmentation with outdated, overpriced low-end versions of their hit products is embarrassing.

Just sell the baseline iPad Air with 128GB and stop screwing over consumers with a product that’s already way too expensive considering that it’s locked and blocked from ever being more than a huge iPhone.

Nobody needs three different versions of the same product. You’re devaluing the brand identity.

I can’t wait to see Apple’s upcoming ultra low-value AirPods USB-C that’ll have the exterior design of AirPods 3 or Pro but less features than AirPods 2nd Gen. But somehow they’ll still retail for $99.

Monopolies just can’t help putting out more and more trash products. Must be a byproduct of earning a million times more than the effort and capital you spend.

Good prices. Looks like Apple will be updating only the iPad Pro and Air in the coming weeks. So might be ok to go ahead and buy this.
