As noted by ABC News, Best Buy yesterday began a brief promotion offering $50 off of the price of the iPhone 5c. With the 16 GB model normally priced at $99.99 on a two-year contract in the U.S., the discount cuts pricing on the device to just $49.99. The offer brings the cost of the higher-capacity 32 GB model down to $149.99 with a contract.

The discount, which comes in the form of a gift card that can be applied to the in-store iPhone purchase itself, comes just two weeks after the device's launch and beats Walmart's $79.99 pricing on the 16 GB model that has been available since launch.

iPhone 5c supplies have remained fairly strong throughout Apple's distribution channels, giving retailers some incentive to reduce pricing to help drive sales. That availability contrasts with significant shortages seen for Apple's flagship iPhone 5s, most acutely with the silver and gold models.

The $50 gift card offer on the iPhone 5c is valid through Monday, October 7.

Update: RadioShack will be offering a similar promotion starting tomorrow, with in-store iPhone 5c purchasers eligible for a $50 gift card they can apply to the purchase of their devices. The promotion will run through November 2. Customers can also take advantage of RadioShack's Trade & Save program to receive up to $250 in store credit for trading in their current iPhones.

The 5C should have been free or $50 to start.

Overall, the cost of a 2 year contract with AT&T, you pretty much spend about $2400 + 199 for a 5S, or spend $2400 + $99 for the inferior 5C.

Or not. People are obviously paying for it.

Uh oh, here come the "iPhone 5c is a flop" crowd.

Grabbed popcorn and flame suit.

The lowest monthly fee at AT&T is $55, if you kept the original "$15 for 200MB" plan.

The 5C is it's own product category.

That's because people just see $0 and think, 'free phone!'.

Only plausible explanation for all those people still buying the iPhone 4 last year...

Doesn't sound like it to me.

Discounts aren't given to two week old devices that are selling very strongly, e.g. the 5S.

Note: This doesn't qualify for price guaranty on prior purchases because it's a gift card offer.

I'm thinking of just outright returning my phone and re-purchasing it then.

I bought it on 9/20 but being a "Best Buy Elite" member grants me a 30-day return policy.

Is it still required to have a data plan? My tmobile is $15 a month which I love as I pretty much only text. It would be nice to have some of the apps but I don't really need internet everywhere i go. Would rather just buy the device outright and keep my plan.

I just got a white 5C from best buy and they gave me a $50 and $25 gift card lol. They applied both to my total. Works with me.

I think this is great - and it will definitely move a considerable amount of iPhones. Between these deals and the one WalMart just announced...

Of course - if this were a promotion for an Android phone, I could only imagine the comments that would transpire.

Well, I spent $30/month per line on T-Mobile, and pay for the phone up-front, so the phone's actual price is its actual price. $549 is still cheaper than $649.

I just wish Radio Shack offered this deal on unlocked iPhones. Although I supposed I could buy an AT&T then pay the early termination fee, unlock it, and move it to my T-Mobile SIM... ('Cause I won't buy from Best Buy or Walmart.)

You think people's choosing the "inferior" (rolls eyes) 5c is the most ludicrous thing in that example, while others might question the sanity of spending $100/month (for 2 years) for *any* cell phone.

Wow, the telcos have done an amazing job convincing people that extortion is nothing more than today's "best buy" for discerning consumers.

Apparently this is what has to happen to actually sell these phones.

Do people really think these are not selling? They sold 9 million iPhones a couple weeks ago between the 5s & 5c.

You think they're trying to sell phones? I think it shows they're willing to give (rather valuable) phones away so they can sell contracts.

But if it's mostly the 5s and not the 5c, they need to find a way to sell through all the 5cs that they have.

Best Buy is also offering the same $50 gift card on all Samsung Galaxy smartphones with a 2-year contract. I got the email on that yesterday.
