Can someone who used the Best Buy trade in program explain to me how it works?
Similarly the edu discount (Do I need to have a .edu email address)? I do work for K-12 if that makes a difference.

I have a 2012 13" MBP i7 (non retina) 8GB. Pulled the spinner drive and the optical so I'm running dual SSD. I could install a 500GB back into the drive bay.
No dents and very clean chassis.

With a 750GB spinner drive and DVD drive the trade in is marked as $415
I'm on the fence of doing a trade in and hoping for another MBA deal.

I did a trade-in for an old iPad. They just visually inspect the item to make sure it powers on, and isn't icloud locked, etc. Then they generate a gift card to you.

To answer the education coupons it is a coupon code that is emailed to your .edu email address, they come out ~monthly and can be used in store or online. You must sign up in advance to get them. It should not have any impact on trade in which is a seperate transaction at the service desk. Your purchase could then be made at a register/kiosk or online using the gift card and the coupon.

I go with B&H instead. They have an EDU discount program as well and will price match Apple. Also, no tax.

Also, no tax.

I love B&H and have spent many thousands of dollars there over the years. But they recently added a facility in New Jersey so that was like a global 7% price increase for me. I still use them for specialized video and computer stuff I can't find elsewhere, but if Best Buy stocks the same thing, I buy it locally now. They price matched a B&H SSD I wanted last year. ;)

Have never traded in a computer at Best Buy, but traded my iPhone when they had a promotion. Quick and easy, the gift card was applied to the purchase of a new phone.

But use tax ;-)

People are generally unaware of this, but most states do indeed have a "use tax" that requires you to send in sales tax for un-taxed items that you buy out of state. And if you pay tax out of state but the rate is lower than the local rate, you're even supposed to pay them the difference! Check it out, just look for "use tax" on your state's website.

Years ago, I spent a few thousand dollars on computers that I used for business purposes so I actually paid the use tax on them - there's a line on the NJ state tax return for this. When my tax accountant saw I was doing this, he laughed. :D

Also, no tax.

Not if Trump has his way. Soon, everyone, everywhere in the US will be paying sales tax on internet sales. MAGA! ;)

With regards to BB trade-in, I use it often. It's very easy, especially if you do your trade-in valuation online first. Walk in, give your phone number as ID, and they look up your specifics. They visually inspect and power on the device. They take your ID and scan it and then hand you a gift card.

The value they give isn't that great, but for the super lazy, it's a fast, easy way to get some $$$ for a BB purchase.
