I will be traveling via airplane to see my wife's family over Christmas, and I'd really like to take some type of entertainment with me. I currently have CoD4 and both Knights of the Old Republic games on my rMBP (13" 2015). I may also download borderlands again.

What is the best affordable controller for use with a Mac? Yes, price is a factor because the controller will likely only be for occasional use (when traveling). A Mouse is not an option.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I do have an XBOX one. I see that microsoft enabled Windows 7 and 8.1 support for the XB1 wireless adapter today.

Has anyone tried this combo (XB1 controller + wireless adapter) on a macbook pro?

My current controller for OS X is a Wii U pro controller. The battery life is absolutely insane. I use it with the Mayflash adapter. You can switch from xinput ro directinput, so OS X will pick it up without too much fuss. ou can also remap the A-B buttons so they will function like the xbox 360 placement or the Nintendo placement. I have absolutely no complaints with this controller.

Depending on your preferences, the analog stick placement may not be optimal, but i got used to it pretty quickly.

A dualshock 4 controller will also work very well. I use that when the GF is using the Wii U controller on the actual Wii U.

I ended up getting an Afterglow XBOX 360 controller @ Target for $19.xx today with a price match. I am going to give it a whirl. The Dual Shock 4 is just too pricey for my intended use. Plus, I'm partial to the setup on the 360 / Xbox One controllers.

PS3 has native BlueTooth support and works for many games those that do you can map to most any game using joystick mapper. I hear PS4 Controller also has native support in OS X.10.10 and X.10.11
the new controller that comes with the appleTV version of Disiney Infinity 3.0 also works fine.
PS3 Controller works well with older Macbook Pros (ie mid 2007) under X.10.9 - X.10.11

Pretty much any controller that supports the directinput protocol will work on Mac OS X without too much fuss. It is the controllers that use xinput (such as the microsoft controllers) that will not work out the box. These usually require separate drivers to function on OS X.
