I have just received the new MBA.

I currently have an old ATC, which to be honest I only use as a glorified signal booster for the wifi. I also have a very old buffalo linkstation which has various backups, films and photos saved to it.

I really dont want to transfer all the rubbish from my current macbook to the new one and don't have the time to filter out the rubbish, so thought I would invest in a new NAS and transfer everything to there so that I can start afresh on my new MBA.

So I was wondering if anyone could help me.

Firstly what is the best reasonably priced up to date NAS that is easy to use with mac please?

Secondly would I be better off creating a new apple ID for the new MBA rather than risk transfering all irrelevant unwanted files from my current apple ID? I assume there is no way to clean up or restore to default on my apple ID? Thank you in anticipation.

“Reasonably priced” is subjective. What’s your budget? Have an old PC? There are open source NAS operating systems.

Besides your budget, just what is your storage space requirement? Given the list of the equipment you own, I get the idea your storage requirements are not that high and a NAS might be overkill in your situation when a standard external drive could do. I do own and can recommend the brand Synology for ease of use (they come in a wide variety of capacities and speeds so the cost can vary from a couple $100 to ... quite a lot). But even the Synology has a learning curve, and I own one so that I can access my files (primarily video and photographs) from a number of devices on the network (4 computers, several iPads, and a couple of phones). For just one computer, they really make sense for people with very large storage requirements (> 10 tb).

Not a NAS user; NAS curious, and noticed your thread. Here's a question...what do you want to do with it going forward? I saw this:

Is that it? You want it to act like an external hard drive for large media libraries and main system backups?

Is wireless access important, or will it be connected to your computer by ethernet, etc...?

Is remote access important, like when you're on vacation?

What would be the total size capacity of the system?

If it has media files that aren't on your main computer, I assume you intend to back it up, too? So do you plan to do RAID?
