I have some external USB drives and one of them seems to be having issues.

I've done the built in disk utility app and it does it's thing but never seems right.

Is there another way built into the OS or a 3rd party utility or set of utilities that excels at checking and if possible repairing the health of your disk drives and for that matter the system as a whole?

We use DiskWarrior, fixes things that Disk Utility can't.

I know others who recommend Onyx but I know nothing about it.

If you need to get data off a corrupt or damaged disk (even things like a missing partition table) then I'd highly recommend UFSexplorer

Thank you!

Disk Utility only fixes file system errors not physical problems. Backup your data and see if formatting/re-partitioning the drive fixes the problems.
