Best Ex.HDD format for use on both Win/OSX?

So i plugged in my external HDD into my Windows PC for the first time last night, it wasn't recognised, after 30 mins of playing around and thinking it was dying i realised it is not readable by Windows.

So what is the best file system for external hard drives?

I need something that will work properly on both systems. FATs 4GB file size limit puts me off so i guess i'm left with NTFS or ExFAT?

Is ExFAT a suitable file system or is it worth paying the money for the software that allows NTFS on OSX?
