Is there a good app for this, one of my external hard drives keeps giving me the message of disk not ejected properly message. It keeps ejecting.

I want to see if it is failing.

I have DiskDriveDX installed, but it cannot read my external hard drives, it says it needs a smart stat update, but I do not know what to do for that.

May be just the cable, or the connector. In this case, no software can help
