I am looking for a portable external hard drive that will work between my PC and Mac.

I prefer a hard drive with a firewire and USB connection.

if you're looking for ultra-portable I have used a SmartDisk FireLite (they come in varities of either USB 2.0 or firewire400 - not both through). this drive is powered through the USB or firewire wire.

if you're looking for a standard external drive I recommend the Western Digital MyBook Premium Triple interface - i have a 500 gig one and it's worked great thus far, not to mention it has all 3 interfaces (USB 2.0, firewire 400 and 800).

hope that helps.

The Applestores also have the Iomega portable which has FW400 and USB2 both bus-powered and also the LaCie rugged which has the same plus FW800, although I would not normally recommend LaCie external drives.

I have Formac disk mini oxygen 500GB and it works very well.
Plus, it is a very nice design. It has FW and USB.

I'm using a 320GB Maxtor Basics Personal Storage, one of the older models.. Works fine.

Just go to your local computer store and look at HDDs... I kinda like the Western Digital ones, they look great and stylish.

simple tech makes good portable hard drives. but if not portable then i always go western digital, i have 3 of them and havent had any problems. the my books are definatly the best though, and the most aesthetically appealing.

I'd recommend the Disk Maxi. Comes in black and white, USB 2.0, Firewire 400 and 800, its sooo tiny and is the sexiest drive I have found. Its simplicity makes you think it could be made by Apple.
