Thanks for searching. This question comes up almost daily.

You need to tell us what kind of things you'll be using it for. USB will most likely be fine.

i'm looking for fw800. 7200rpm. 1tb would be nice, but if i can get something i don't have to plug into AC i'd be willing to sacrafice extra space for portability. i'm trying to keep it around 150.

one thing i've been looking at is the seagate barracuda...this could work if i can find an enclosure with fw800 for a good price...the best prices i'm finding are $89. is there anything better?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148337

those lacie's are $279 + shipping.

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb $110 w/ free shipping.

OWC Mercury Elite Pro Quad eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB 2.0 Enclosure Kit$90.74 shipped.

$200. is that the best deal for 1tb fw800?

I have the Elite Pro with an F1 as well and I highly recommend it. I use mine with an eSATA connection and the transfer rates are quite good.

I am looking for a 1TB external hard drive with an 800 fire wire connection and a 10,000 rpm spindle speed.
I'll be editing Avid on an iMac I will be keeping all my media on the external hard drive and want I to be able to render it as fast as possible. I was told that 7200 rpm is ok, but 10,000 is better...I am having a hard time finding one. Whatdya think?

Hitachi has a couple 10k RPMs that received good reviews, even 15k RPM if you're really keen on speed. But I doubt you'll find one that has 1TB storage.

I've replied to about 6 other "what is the best external HD?" threads out there but here goes anyway:

I bought the IcyDock MB559UEB1-S and put in a Seagate 1.5TB HDD and it has been working perfectly for the past 6 months. The IcyDock uses the Oxford 924B Firewire 800 chipset and looks looks like something designed by Apple themselves. It is fanless yet the sleek aluminum body keeps the HDD inside running coolly. It looks great next to the aluminum iMac.

I'm going to copy/paste to the next thread with the same topic. :p
