I'm considering buying the new 12.9" M1 iPad Pro. We don't have a TV/home theater setup at home right now, so I want to buy an external screen that I can connect the iPP to so we can watch streaming videos. Sadly, the $5,000 Apple XDR Display is out of our reach. Looking to spend $1k or less. Any recommendations?

Just to be clear, I will only be using this screen to watch movies/TV. I won't be using it for gaming or as an external monitor for the iPad.

It seems like a weird solution to me. An external screen could be a TV or monitor. A monitor is going to be smaller for the dollar. So if you’re going to get a TV, you might as well get an Apple TV to stream videos.

I would recommend spending $800 or less on the largest possible 4K TV that makes sense for your viewing space. Then spend the remainder of your $1K budget on a steaming box like Apple TV or Roku.

If you start watching something on the iPad and then decide to change to the big screen, you can use AirPlay to make the switch wirelessly. There is no mainstream reason (that I can think of) to connect your iPad directly to the TV.

Yeah. You could get a decent 4K Roku TV for under a grand. I’m super deep in the Apple ecosystem and even I just can’t justify a second Apple TV for my bedroom because the roku built into my TV does everything I want and does it perfectly well.

Thanks, everyone. We don't have an existing TV right now—long story.

Why an AppleTV or Roku rather than just using the iPad Pro 12.9"? I'll be spending quite a bit on the iPad Pro so I'm trying to minimize additional purchases if I can.

For me it was just that most TVs already have a “smart” system built in these days. So it turned out there was no reason to have to physically hook up my iPad when my new TV had Roku built in. I wasn’t setting out to buy a smart TV—it just seemed like that is what practically everything is nowadays.

Ah, I understand now. That helps, thanks.

Then id suggest getting a smaller cheaper iPad.
