Topic v day is coming up so thought id put this on my list

i have a imac 2013 and it has a ssd but want an external one for some 1080p video recording instead of using my main drive

Samsung makes some good drives, I have the 850 Pro, but on an external drive it will be the interface that dictates speed - if that is what you are looking for. I doubt you'll realize any speed benefit going with SSD over traditional

If you own a Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt portable adapter, it is possible to add your own choice of SSD. It will be very fast, however I think that with the portable adapter there can be instabilities if you use a drive larger than 512 MB.

If you use the desktop adapter then you should have no issues with instability.

This does give you the flexibility of being able to use more than one model / size of SSD.

I also sometimes use SSD drives plugged into "cheap" USB 3.0 enclosures.
