best free audio converter (need a switch replacement)

hey all,

i've been using switch to convert audio files forever, but it's slow and always makes my macbook fan spin out of control (and NOTHING else does that). anyone have a good, comprehensive, FREE alternative to switch to recommend?

I don't use converters much but whenever in need i use MAX

I also use Max, but converting audio is processor intensive, so it's gonna take time and make your fans rev up anyway. Changing app will not solve that.
