Thinking about getting an iPod6 for myself now that prices are down and I was wondering where the best free music downloads are available since iTunes is now charging for everything. I listen to most genre of music but do have a weakness for 60 and 70's music. Looking through various websites, I am concerned about downloading form some due to virus warnings. Thanks,

NoiseTrade.com is a legal and free music download site where artists put up their music to download for free with optional "tipping" if you like their music. I've been using it for years now, and it's got a wide variety of music selections. :)

when did apple not charge for music? if you are talking the radio stations, just get pandora, its better, and free or you can pay a little a month for even better service. I think you could get something similar with a free Spotify account as well.

For free downloads: https://www.jamendo.com/

Check your local library. My library is connected with Freegal Music. I can download 5 songs every week. All genres of music. Not all artists participate. They add about 100 albums to catalog each week. I can also stream 3 hours of music also.

Freegal® is a free music service from your library. All you need is your library card number and possibly a PIN if your library utilizes them. Freegal offers access to about 9 million songs, including Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists, and over 15,000 music videos. In total the collection is comprised of music from over 28,000 labels with music that originates in over 100 countries. There is no software to download, and there are no digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. Access to Freegal is limited to patrons of subscribing libraries.

Good idea takiv, I looked at my local library and they have a fairly good collection that I can work with. Thanks for the suggestion.
The service my library subscribes to allows me to set up playlist and wish lists. I try and keep my wish list full so it only takes a few moments each Monday to download my 5 songs. I've downloaded over 500 songs over the past several years. I can alwYs find something for free : )

Have you considered trying dealnews.com? Searching under "mp3 downloads", I've found that the site lists some free music ranging from well-known performers to independent musicians.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I have also found a way to download songs off of some other sources that has given me a good library. Now a happy man!!
