Hey everyone. I'm still in PC land and I run Xnews as my newsgroup reader. I am hoping to make the jump to an IBook in the coming weeks, and I noticed Xnews has no Mac support. Can anyone suggest a good newsgroup reader for Mac?

Thanks,
Dennis

How do I get an IP address for a news group? Are they free, I am new to news groups. Need some help please.

There is not an IP address for a news group. There is a news server (which your ISP likely provides for free) which you'll need to get the address to. Once you have that, you enter the server name into your reader and then get a list of the groups available on that server. Then, you may subscribe to whatever groups you're interested in.

As a general rule of thumb, many ISPs name their servers pretty standardly, so you might try "news.<yourisp.whatever>".

Now, for my own question. On the PC, I use Grabit which is free and very easy to use and capable. I've been doing some searches on binary readers for the Mac here and a common suggestion seems to be Thoth, however, their site is defunct and now run by a domain squatting company.

So, since the last threads discussing this were not overly recent, are there any good free binary newsreaders out there for OS X and barring "free", what would be the best-value commercial solution considering that Thoth seems to be unavailable at this time?

EDIT: I've found Hogwasher (looks good, but $50??? ) and Unison. Surely, with all of the cross-compilable Unix/Linux/etc. stuff out there, there has to be a Grabit-style binary newsgrabber/reader available for free...

Thanks!

Unison is quite awesome. Pro: File grouping! Con: no "view only new posts" filter
Duff-Man says....except Unison is not free - it is $24.95, which personally I find a bit steep for a newsreader. I use MT-Newswatcher as well...but Halime is okay too (but a bit quirky)....oh yeah!
