Hi,
Can anyone recommend the easiest way to connect an external monitor to a 2013 Macbook Air. It won't be used for gaming or anything that requires very high performance.

Thanks

If it's a flat panel monitor then it will almost certainly have a DVI connector. Look for a "Mini DisplayPort to DVI" adapter on Amazon or Monoprice or similar. Should cost you $7 or so. Then you can use it to plug a DVI cable into the MacBook and it'll work.

If you buy a current Dell monitor with display port, it will come with the cable in the box to connect to the Thunderbolt/mini displayport on the MacBook.

I have a Dell U2414H (1920x1080), it's great, but I would recommend the U2415 for the extra vertical resolution/space (1920x1200).
