I want to get a new GPU for my 2008 Mac Pro since the current one (ATI Radeon HD 2600 with 256MB VRAM) is laggy sometimes and is very noisy. But I don't know much about these things other than the fact that NVIDIA will not get any business from me because of their track record.

I know there are a lot of ATI GPUs out there that are not too expensive, around $170, and have got to be a lot better than my GPU. There's the Radeon HD 6870, for example. Do I need some Mac-specific GPU, or can I just buy one from ATI's site or Newegg and put it in? And have any standards changed since 2008 that would make the new GPUs not work with my Mac?

Also, I'm running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, if that matters. I could go to Lion or Mountain Lion, but I'd greatly prefer not to.
