Off Backpacking for 3 months shortly and really wish to take my 13" macbook pro with me.
I'm worried about it getting damaged, any advice on a really touch shell/case/bag?

cheers

Not the answer you want - but I think you should buy a cheap netbook to travel with.

why? the 13'' macbook is fine to travel with. I would get the speck hardshell, I had a black satin see-thru and I thought it made it really sharp looking. Now I have a clear speck case for my 17'' and it also looks nice on it. The case really protects well and doesn't add much bulk.

Backpacking can be hard on gear like this though. Lots of dust, sweat, banging bags and sand don't go well with gear. I went travelling for a year and didn't have any electronic equipment survive (I'm very careful as well).

Although that case put above is hardcore! If it's going to survive then it looks like that'd be your best bet.

Can the hard shells even prevent damage from being banged around in a backpack? Wouldn't most of the damage come from it being shaken, dropped, or dust. I would think the shell would only help prevent scratches.

This one sure can: http://www.pelican-case.com/1090cc.html

(the other one was for 13" MB, 1090 is for 15" MBP). I'm getting the one I just linked to. For $84 it's a steal. It's what I've always wanted but other cases that are the same thing I have seen for many hundreds more. I'm getting that one as soon as the Arrandale 15" MBP update is out. Pelican is one of those companies that looks like it REALLY stands by their product. Kind of like Maglite or LL Bean.

Yes, it very much does, thats why mine has one. Ive had a drop so hard that it cracked the corner but didnt harm the MBP. Get an Incase hardshell, best you can get.
