Hi,

I'm looking to purchase an external hard drive in the coming days. Looking for one with between 500mb and 1TB.

I've had a look on the Apple site and a lot of them show they are compatible with Mac OS 10.5 & 10.6 but no mention of 10.7?

Has anyone got and using a hard drive that fits my description? Would you recommend it? It's going to be purely for Time Machine, so I'm looking to just plug it in and not have to worry about it again.

Plug it into what? USB, Fire Wire? or do you mean an all in one USB drive. If so they will pretty much all work with Lion, and can be used as your TM backup drive.

The caddy / drive will need to be left connected, and turned on all the time. apart from pointing TM at it, that's all you have to worry about. You want about twice the size of your installed HDD so if you have a 500GB drive in your Mac, you want a 1TB TM drive.

Have you considered a Time Capsule?

I have a Western Digital "My Book". Hasn't failed in the few years i've had it and its pretty quiet.
