A couple days ago I had a rough experience with Hitachi 7k500 500gb HDD - it made entire case of my Mac to vibrate. The noise levels were rather high as well. I have returned it.

Which other 500gb hardrive in £40-60 range would you recommend?

Which online retailer would be best, in case of a lemon? The issue here is that unusually high vibration levels may not be regarded as a fault per se and quite a few sellers do not offer returns on functional unpacked items. What is your experience with this?

Vibration was likely caused by the higher rotation speed of the HD (yours was 7200rpm while stock drive is 5400rpm). If you get a 5400rpm drive, there should be no vibration issues

I agree that 7200rpm HDD is more likely to vibrate than 5400rpm one. However, many people reported having the same problem with the slower hard drives, like WD Blue Scorpio (this is a separate thread for that)

I have a 320GB Scorpio Black in mine, which causes minimal excess vibration and noise over my stock drive. May want to check out the 500GB version
