best / ideal iOS for iPhone 5?

Any comments on what iOS runs best?

Plan to purchase a used iP5 and have seen offered with iOS 6 thru 9, although most seem to have iOS8.

Would shop for one with the ideal iOS and not upgrade.

Part of that would likely depend also on what apps and features you might want/need as many apps might not be available on older iOS versions at this point and various features that might be needed or wanted might not be there in some older iOS versions.

iOS 8 for now. iOS 9 in a year or two.

Almost no apps support iOS 6 and few apps support iOS 7 on their latest versions.
iOS 8 is still well supported and runs noticeably faster than iOS 9 or 10.

I've never used FaceTime on an iPhone! I've always thought that's what an iPad is for.
